Heather Lee Steele, a beloved daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 27, 2026, just shy of her 55th birthday. Born in Galion, Ohio, on September 30, 1971, Heather was a beacon of warmth and kindness to all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Heather was the cherished daughter of Donna Markel Merchant and the late Stephen Bruce Smith. She shared a close bond with her mother, with whom she spent many joyful years as a member of the Huntsville Bridge Club. Her father, Steve, preceded her in death, but his memory lived on in her heart and stories.

Heather was a proud graduate of Huntsville High School, class of 1989, and went on to pursue her passion for nursing at Calhoun Community College School of Nursing, where she graduated in 1995. Her 31-year career as a nurse was marked by her dedication and compassion, earning her the love and respect of patients and colleagues alike. Her commitment to the well-being of others extended beyond her professional life, as she was known for always offering a helping hand to family, friends, and strangers, never meeting a stranger.

A true lover of life, Heather was an avid outdoorswoman who found joy in kayaking and exploring new places. Her adventurous spirit also found thrill in roller coasters. Heather’s unwavering loyalty to the Cleveland Browns was a testament to her hopeful and resilient nature. She was also a devoted fan of the television show Survivor, often dreaming of one day finding herself on the island.

Heather leaves behind her two beloved sons, Tyler, Jake, and his wife Christina, who were her pride and joy. Her legacy continues through her three cherished grandchildren, Will, Noah, and JJ, who brought immeasurable happiness to her life. She is also survived by her loving mother, Donna; her brother, Jason, and his wife, Rebekah; and her sister, Emily, and her husband Jerry. Heather was a beloved aunt to Ruth, Joey, Lydia, and Julia, with whom she shared many cherished memories.

Heather’s life was a testament to love, kindness, and resilience. Her welcoming nature and infectious enthusiasm for life left an indelible mark on all who knew her. As we celebrate her life, we are reminded of the joy and compassion she brought into the world.

A celebration of life will be held at the Huntsville Bridge club at 2 p.m. Saturday, October 3.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Heather’s memory to the SAFE Project. Heather’s spirit will forever remain in the hearts of her family, friends, and all those whose lives she touched.
