FLORENCE-The free film series The Screening Room: Classics, Crowd-Pleasers, Cult Favorites and Neglected Gems launches its September lineup at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 8, with a special 50th-anniversary showing of Jason and the Argonauts (1963) at the Florence-Lauderdale Public Library, 350 N. Wood Ave., Florence, Alabama.
Directed by Don Chaffey, the epic adventure – part of our memorial tribute series “Farewell to Ray Harryhausen (1920-2013)” – centers on the mythic Greek hero Jason (Todd Armstrong), who leads an intrepid team of adventurers in a perilous quest to find the Golden Fleece.
The international supporting cast includes Nancy Kovack, Gary Raymond, Nigel Green, Honor Blackman, Laurence Naismith, Douglas Wilmer, Niall McGinnis, Patrick Troughton, Nigel Green and Michael Gwynn.
Legendary visual-effects artist Harryhausen (Mighty Joe Young, The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad, Clash of the Titans) created some of his most astonishing and unforgettable fantasy creatures for Jason and the Argonauts, from the giant Talos and the deadly Hydra to winged Harpies and sword-fighting Skeletons.
The afternoon will also include a screening of the Harryhausen’s short stop-motion film The Story of Hansel and Gretel (1951).
