Harriet Gillies, age 92, passed away on January 24, 2026 at Redstone Village Retirement Community in Huntsville, Alabama.  Born on May 12, 1933, in the Bronx, New York City, NY, Harriet lived a full life surrounded by her loving friends and family.

Harriet grew up in South Charleston, West Virginia where she met her childhood sweetheart, David Gillies Sr.  They married in 1955 and enjoyed 60 years of marriage until his death in 2015.

Harriet graduated from Duke University with a degree in Nursing.  She worked as a surgical nurse in East St. Louis, Illinois.  Harriet also lived in Wichita, Kansas and Huntsville, Alabama.  She worked at Huntsville Hospital as Nurse Manager in the Neurological Surgery Unit for over 20 years.  Harriet and her husband retired and lived on Tims Ford Lake near Lynchburg, Tennessee.  She was active in the Lynchburg Homemakers Club.   After her husband’s death Harriet moved to Redstone Village in Huntsville with her dog Benji.

Harriet enjoyed gardening, cooking, playing bridge, and camping with her family.  She also loved cross-stitch, jigsaw puzzles and crocheting.

Harriet is survived by her children – David Gillies Jr. (Sandy) , Sharon Preston (Grant), Mike Gillies (Tammy), and Scott Gillies (Michelle).  She has 7 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

Harriet will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, and friend to all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
