Harold Meeker – Obituary

Harold Meeker of 2000 Woodmore Drive, Huntsville, Alabama was born on March 13, 1939 in Washington City, Jefferson County, Missouri to Reed Meeker and Isabell Charlotte White. He died at Huntsville Hospital on Monday July 2nd 2018 surrounded by his family and friends. He was a graduate from Farrell High School, Farrell, Pennsylvania. He was a retired US Army Major and retired with 35 years’ service as GS-13, U.S. Army Aviation & Missile Command, from Redstone Arsenal, AL. He served in the Army for 22 years becoming a highly decorated combat veteran. Mr. Meeker received the Silver Star, Combat Infantryman’s Badge, four Bronze Stars, three Army Commendation Metals, two Purple Hearts, Air Medal, Meritorious Service Metal and was decorated twice the Republic of Vietnam of Gallantry in Combat and has been inducted into Madison County Hall of Heroes. He was a member of every veteran’s organization in Northern Alabama, American Legions Post 237, VFW Post 2702, DAV Chapter 26, VVA Chapter 74, Military Order of the Purple Heart, Fraternal Order of Eagles, BPO Elks Lodge 1648. He was a Colonel in the 1st Inf Bde, Alabama State Defense Force, Parade Marshal, Madison County Veteran’s Day Parade for over 20-years, Veteran Ad Hoc Committee dedication to the establishment of “Tut” Fann Veterans Home and numerous other organizations. He has been awarded numerous awards for his community services by the Governor of Alabama, Huntsville Major’s Office, Huntsville Police Department, President of Korea for his military service and too numerous awards more to mention. His passion to helping and improving the lives of veterans of all branch service to live their remaining lives with dignity honor that has been often overlooked and he has been the rally point for change in veteran benefits and sacrifices that they made for their country. He was a “Good Man”, an American Hero that loved his country and flag above all else and put his life on the line to defend it. He had love and respect for his family, friends, fellow veterans and he showed it on a daily basis and looked for the good and positive traits in everyone he met or came into contact with.

Hal was preceded in death by his father and mother, Reed and Isabell Meeker; sister, Kathy; 2nd wife, Charlotte. Survivors include his wife, Linda Davis Meeker; sons, Christopher Meeker, Kevin Meeker; daughter, Kelly Denise Rucks; son-in-law, Stacey V. Rucks; grandchildren, Kolby and Ashley Rucks of Geraldine, AL. He is also survived by ten siblings living throughout the United States.

Visitation will be on Friday, July 6, 2018 from 1-3pm. Funeral Services will be held at 3:00pm at Valhalla Funeral Home, 698 Winchester Road NE, Huntsville, AL 35811. Rev. James Henderson is officiating. Interment will follow in Valhalla Memory Gardens – Chapel of Peace.
