Harold Loyd Long, 89, of Lewisburg, TN, passed peacefully from this life on October 18, 2025. He was born December 31, 1935, in Geary, Oklahoma, to Dale Long and Elsie Stalcup Long.
After graduating high school in 1954, Harold was drafted into the United States Army. Thanks to his quick hands on a typewriter— a skill learned in high school, where he was the only boy in a class full of girls—he was assigned as a clerk. He often joked that the Army gave him “an M1 to protect his typewriter.” His service took him through Missouri and Georgia, and eventually to Germany, where he managed records and assignments for fellow soldiers until his honorable discharge in 1956.
Not long after returning home, Harold went roller skating in Enid, Oklahoma—one of his favorite pastimes. It was there he met Edith Kay Stout, who quickly became the love of his life. The two married in May of 1958 and shared 67 years of devotion, adventure, and family. Together they raised four children. Harold’s family grew to include seven grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren, each of whom he cherished deeply.
Faith was central to Harold’s life. He was baptized as a teenager in Oklahoma and began leading songs at a young age. He was an active member of Perry Church of Christ in Perry, Oklahoma. Since moving to Tennessee in 2009, he and Edith were
faithful members of the Church Street Church of Christ in Lewisburg, Tennessee. For about 28 years he served as a Sojourner, traveling across the country to encourage congregations, children’s homes, support mission work, and share the Gospel. Their
journeys took them to countless churches and communities where Harold left behind not just new friends, but lasting examples of faith and service.
Harold will be remembered for his singing, his humor, and his rich storytelling. More than anything, he will be remembered for the way he lived his life for the Lord, the example of perseverance in his marriage, and the way he glowed when showing
pictures of his children, grandchildren and many great grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife Edith; children, J.D./James D. (Shari) Long, Jan/Janet Pomerantz, Johnny/John (Beverly) Long, and Joe (Becky) Long; grandchildren Nate (Charity) Long, Michelle (Jonathan) Jones, Treena (Chris) Mackinlay, Amy (Elyar) Sanchez, Jonathan Long, David (Grayson) Long, and Cameron Pomerantz; 13 great-grandchildren; sisters Wilma Speaks and Kay O’Donnell, and brother Leslie Long.
He was preceded in death by his parents Dale and Elsie Long, and brothers Billy Long and Elmer Long.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, at London Funeral Home, 324 W. Church Street, Lewisburg, TN. Visitation will held from 10:00 am – 11:00 am with service following at 11:00 am. Burial will follow at Lone Oak Cemetery.
London Funeral Home and Crematory is honored to assist the family with arrangements.
