Well it is that time of year again…time to ring in a New Year and be done with the old. 2021 was not a stellar year for most…possibly a worse year would have been 2020. So here are a few things that just might bring us luck in 2022.
Foods to eat for 2022 luck:
Pork and sauerkraut on New Year’s Day brings good luck because pigs root around with their snouts in a forward motion. Sauerkraut is made with cabbage, which is green like money.
Greens to start off the new year in a healthy way as well as bring yourself good luck. Greens such as kale, cabbage and spinach look like money so they are thought to bring luck.
Cornbread thought to be lucky because it resembles bars of gold.
A dozen grapes at the stroke of midnight on New Year’s will bring good luck.
Things you should do for 2022 luck:
Light a bayberry candle During Colonial times the bayberry candles were difficult to make and were used on special occasions. It became a tradition to save the candles for Christmas Eve or New Year’s Eve and burned down to the nub for good luck and prosperity.
Stuff some money under your carpet or rug Romanians believe that by putting some cash under your carpet, you’ll ensure a prosperous year ahead.
Open your door at midnight believed by the Irish that doing this let in the good luck and and let out the bad luck.
Start off on the right foot when you wake up on New Year’s Day and you get out of bed, you should make sure to put your right foot on the floor first to ensure good luck. The Polish tradition just might be the lucky tradition for 2022.
Now be wary and stay alert here are a few things to ensure bad luck for 2022.
What not to do for Luck in 2022:
Don’t wash those clothes according to superstition, if you wash clothes on New Year’s Day, you’ll be “washing for the dead” or washing a loved one away — meaning someone in your household will die in the coming year.
Do not sweep your floor on January 1 leave the dust there until the 2nd. The idea is that you sweep out luck if you sweep on New Year’s Day.
Keep it all in on New Year’s Day. Don’t take anything out of your home on New Year’s Day. Literally, nothing. No garbage goes out, no packages are taken to the car or luck will go out and not come back in.
Do not eat this On New Year’s:
Poultry & Winged Fowl. You should avoid eating anything with wings on New Year’s Day because it is believed your good luck will “fly away”.
Lobster, Shrimp & Crab because they move sideways and not forward in the water, you should not eat them on New Year’s Day. It is believed that eating these shellfish on the first day of the year will bring you setbacks throughout the year and prevent you from moving ahead in the coming year.
White-Colored Foods are a no no on New Year’s Day, foods that are all white in color, such as rice, bread, eggs, and tofu. According to ancient Chinese beliefs, white symbolizes death– so it is considered unlucky to eat white colored-food on New Year’s Day.
While you’re at it, in German culture it’s considered unlucky to eat every last bit of food on your plate on New Year’s Eve. You should leave some leftover food on your plate past midnight on New Year’s Eve to ward off bad luck in the coming year.
Happy New Year’s everyone. Here’s hoping 2022 is way better than 2021.
