Happy Birthday W.C. Handy – From Your Home Town

Florence, Alabama – On November 16th, a celebration was held at the Handy Museum to honor W.C. Handy’s 139th Birthday.  The “Father of the Blues,” William Christopher Handy, was born in Florence, AL on November 16, 1973.  W.C. Handy was the author and composer of many blues classics such as the Saint Louis Blues, Beale Street Blues and the Memphis Blues.  Mr. Handy was also a band conductor, solo trumpet performer and entertainer.  W.C. Handy remains among the most influential of American songwriters.

Local dignitaries were on hand to welcome the crowd to the event.  Music was provided by Harvey Thompson & the Harvey Thompson Trio, featuring Vocalist Mary Mason.

After the musical program, refreshments were served to the guest and tours of the cabin were given.
