Gwen Watts – Obituary

Gwen Watts, age 92, passed away peacefully in her sleep early Tuesday, December 12, 2017.

Per her request there will only be a graveside service at Colbert Memorial Gardens Thursday, December 14, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. with Dr. Rudy Guess and Dr. Tom Phillips officiating. Burial will be in Colbert Memorial Gardens.

Gwen was born in Townley, Alabama to Samuel Coley Avery and Ida Mabel Avery on March 8, 1925. She was a long-time member of First United Methodist Church in Tuscumbia and graduated from Deshler High School. She met the love of her life, Wayne Thomas Watts of Oklahoma when he was stationed in Courtland while in the Air Force. They were married 60 years before his passing.

Gwen retired from TVA and IFDC. She was very artistic but never realized the extent of her talent. She enjoyed eating out, going to the mall, working crossword puzzles and watching movies.

Gwen was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and brother, Kenneth Avery.

Gwen is survived by daughters, Diane Sparks (Cecil) of Sheffield, AL and Denise Watts of Chattanooga, TN.; Granddaughters, Stephanie Sneed (Anthony) of Sheffield and Dana Gurley (John) of Killen; Great grandchildren, Katie Sneed, Emily Sneed, Joseph Gurley, and Lindsay Gurley.
