, 86, of Haleyville, entered into rest Thursday, April 3, 2014 at his home surrounded by his family.
He was born on March 16, 1928 in Lodi, California. Gust was a member of Beach Grove Baptist Church. Gust served in the United States Navy and Merchant Marines. He attended Purdue University. He was a traveling salesman, Deputy Sheriff in Sacramento County, California and a police officer in Thorton, Colorado. He owned Gus’s Paint and Salvage, worked at Haleyville Lumber and Haleyville Paint and Decorating. Gust was Commander of Haleyville Post 4543 VFW for 12 years, a member of the American Legion and a Colonel in the Alabama State Defense Force for 14 years. Gus did Quick Draw Shows in California, loved wood working, coin collecting and cook outs with the family.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, April 6, 2014 from 6-9pm at Nichols Funeral Home in Haleyville, where services will be held Monday, April 7, 2014 at 2pm. Brother Glenn Bridgmon and Brother Leonard Rigsby will officiate. Burial will follow in Mount Zion Baptist Church Cemetery.
Gust is survived by his wife, Louise Stamos; sons, Thomas (Cheryl) Stamos, Jimmy Stamos, Danny (Sally) Stamos, Donald “Buddy” (Adrienne) Kinard, daughters Linda Valentine, Peggy Kurt, Tina Morrison and brother, Bill (Milagros) Stamos. He was PaPa to 17 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mike and Mary Stamos; brothers, Tommy Stamos, Tony Stamos, Jimmy Stamos; sisters, Virginia Zulim and Ester Renvoldt
