Granville Buford Faires – Obituary

Granville Buford Faires, age 81, died on Wednesday, December 21st, 2016 at ECM Hospital after an extended illness. He was the firstborn of 12 children born to Cleo and Gertie Simon Faires in Pine Hill, Alabama and attended Mars Hill Bible School. Granville was a member of the East Colbert Church of Christ where he served as Minister of Missions and was instrumental in starting their monthly Fishers of Men Fish Fry 16 years ago. He led congregational singing for many years at churches throughout Alabama and Tennessee.

Granville was the iconic outdoorsman. A skilled hunter and famed dog breeder, he cataloged thousands of dog breed lines all over the country and was Owner and Editor of Red Ranger Magazine. He held offices in several national hunting dog organizations and received hundreds of invitations to judge hunting dog events.

Granville is survived by his wife Sandra Fields Faires, daughters Theresa Faires, Melissa Linville, and Gay Nell VanderHyde, all of Florence, AL, Sherry Hammond (Steve), Christy Johnson (Jason), and Erin Martin, all of Lexington, AL, sons Faron Faires, St. Joseph, TN, and Ferlin Faires, Florence, AL, sisters Quava Akins (Andy), Jewel Baine (Robert), Sue Melton (Leo), all of Florence, AL, Rachel Goza (Danny) of Tishamingo, MS, brothers Glenn Faires (Ann) of Cypress Inn, TN, Gary Faires (Dorris), of Florence, AL, 21 Grandchildren and 17 Great-Grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Granville was preceded in death by his parents Cleo and Gertie Faires, sisters Shelba and Sharon Faires, brothers Freddy, Clyde and Eddie Faires, and granddaughter Hope Faires.

Funeral services will be held Friday, December 23rd, 2016 at 3:00pm at Pine Hill Church of Christ, Florence, AL, with Wayne Barrier, Wayne Utley, Joe Bogle, and Brian McCutchen officiating. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow in the Pine Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers are Cory and Tyler Faires, Ryan VanderHyde, Evan Hammond, Nathan and Jordan Bain, John Fulmer, and Jason Faires. Honorary Pallbearers are Ashley Robbins, Bowen Johnson, and Trey and Conner Martin.

Memorials may be made to World Evangelism, East Colbert Church of Christ for Hatti Missions, and Pine Hill Cemetery Fund. A very special “Thank you” to the Northwest Alabama Cancer Center and ECM Staff.
