FLORENCE – The City of Florence is proud to announce the Grand Reopening of the W.C. Handy Recreation Center on Friday, May 23, 2025, marking the completion of a significant milestone. This multimillion-dollar investment revitalizes a facility that has served the Florence community since 1954. The $2.6 million project, approved by the City Council, includes extensive renovations to the interior, new HVAC and plumbing systems, a larger kitchen, a new activities room, and the complete repurposing of the former locker room space into a modern community area with computer stations and tutoring space. Updates also include exterior updates and landscaping.
Council President Kaytrina Simmons, whose district includes the center, shared her excitement, “This center means so much to the residents of District 1 and the entire City of Florence. I am honored to see this vision come full circle. We now have a facility that truly welcomes everyone, from young children to seniors, offering programs and space that meet real community needs.”
Mayor Andy Betterton emphasized the project’s role in community development “Investing in the Handy Recreation Center is an investment in the future of Florence. This facility will be a hub for learning, health, and community connection. I thank the City Council and staff who worked diligently to bring this project to life.”
