ASU.Forensic1MONTGOMERY-Governor Robert Bentley has awarded $68,295 to help the state Department of Forensic Sciences keep up to date on the latest technology developments in the forensics field and use that knowledge to secure a higher conviction rate in court cases.

Funding will provide forensic staff, students and law enforcement officers with continued training and materials required for updating skills and knowledge in the rapid advancements of forensic science. The training is required to maintain accreditation and testimonial qualifications.

“In so many instances forensic evidence is the difference between locking up a criminal and allowing them to go free,” Bentley said. “I appreciate the dedication and hard work shown daily by forensic scientists, law enforcement officers and those who aspire to go into the field to obtain the skills they need to gather the necessary evidence so crucial to the judicial system.”

The department routinely conducts laboratory training and technical meetings to teach advancements and new technology techniques developed in pathology and other sciences related to forensics.

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grant from funds made available by the U.S. Justice Department.

ADECA administers an array of programs supporting law enforcement and traffic safety, economic development, energy conservation, water resource management and recreation development.
