Mrs. Gladys Johnston Akers, age 92, died peacefully at her home, surrounded by her family on September 25, 2013. Visitation will be Saturday from 11-12:30 pm at Morrison Funeral Home of Tuscumbia, followed by a graveside service at 1 p.m. in Oakwood Cemetery, Sheffield.
Mrs. Akers was born in Riverton, AL and lived in Sheffield for more than seventy years. She was a life-long member of the First United Methodist Church of Sheffield. She was a wonderful cook and seamstress and a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Myrtie Johnston; her husband, William T. Akers, Sr. and her son Jerry Akers.
Survivors include her son, William T. Akers Jr. (Carolyn); her daughter, Carolyn Phillips (Ronnie); grandchildren, Caryn Akers Hairell (Kris), Juli Akers Richey (Ralph), Tad Phillips (Angie), Katy Phillips, Kurt Phillips, Finny Akers, Zeb Akers, Isabelle Akers and ten great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers are Tad Phillips, Kurt Phillips, Zeb Akers, William Hairell, Preston Hairell and Hunter Phillips.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Sheffield Public Library or the First United Methodist Church of Sheffield.
