Gilbert Homer Washburn, age 90, of Tuscumbia, died Friday, May 9, 2014.
His family will receive friends Monday, May 12, 2014, 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, Tuscumbia. His funeral service will follow in the church sanctuary with David Lee officiating. Burial will be in Shoals Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Washburn was a native of Haleyville, Alabama, and was a proud veteran of seven major battles of WWII, including the Battle of the Bulge and Normandy. He was a member of the Foreign Legion and the VFW. He was an active member of First United Methodist Church, Tuscumbia, and served in many positions. He was a former board member of Camp Sumatanga, served in the Kiwanis and was past president of North Alabama Laity Club. He was preceded in death by his parents, Willis and Mina Taylor Washburn, brother, Warren Washburn, and son-in-law, Maj. David Cook. Gilbert was a loving person and never met a stranger.
Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Ida Virginia Washburn, of Tuscumbia; daughters, Barbra Cook, of Charleston, S.C., Sandra Honey (David) and Linda Cutshall (Euel), of Tuscumbia; brother, Everett Washburn, of Social Circle, Ga.; grandchildren, Josh Honey (Cindy), Kim Williams (Clay), Kevin Cook (Jenn), Cheri Grimmitt (Ged), all of Tuscumbia, Chris Cutshall (Lindsay), Jeff Cutshall (Amanda), all of Birmingham, Alan Cook, of Atlanta, and Rebekah Melton (Corey), of Charleston, S.C..; great-grandchildren, Caleb and Abby Honey, Christian and Belle Williams, Megan, Lauren, Sierra and Kristen Cook, Lilly and Christopher Cutshall, Noah and Lucy Grimmitt, William and Sarah Austin Cutshall and Zoey Melton.
Pallbearers are grandsons: Josh Honey, Kevin Cook, Chris Cutshall, Alan Cook, Jeff Cutshall, great-grandson, Christian Williams and Paul McGuire.
The family would like to thank Mr. Washburn’s caregivers, Paula Brown, April Softley and Tannie Johnson with Brother’s Keeper, as-well-as, Martha Polk, Janet Forsythe, Aloysius Smith, Kim Williams, and Dana Holt with Hospice of the Shoals, for their loving care.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Camp Sumatanga or First United Methodist Church, Tuscumbia.
