Gilbert “Gene” Short age 82 passed away March 14, 2019.  He was born on February 14th, 1937 in California.   He graduated high school from Twentynine Palms in 1956.  He served in the Air Force for four years before he began working at Santa Fe Railroad, which he also retired from.  He retired back to Mississippi; because he loved the peace and tranquility that Iuka offered.  He enjoyed feeding birds, squirrels and raccoons at his cabin at Yellow Creek.  He is survived by his brother Buryl Short (Rena) of Clifton Arizona; cousin Myra Strom (Rich) of Iuka and other nieces and nephews. He had a special friend  Ron Murphy whom he talked to almost every day since the fourth grade.

He was preceded in death by his parents Henry and Ida Short, and sister Hildra Mann.

Gilbert loved music, he was a regular at the VFW on Friday nights for bluegrass.  He looked forward to the music nights while staying at the Carrington House. He also loved watching Tishomingo County High School sports especially basketball. Later in his life while staying at the Carrington House he would make sure to listen to the broadcasts on the radio.  He loved the kids at TCHS so much that he made an allotment in his will for the Band and Chorus program. Cutshall Funeral Home in Iuka is entrusted with the arrangements.
