Funeral services for Mr. Gerald B. Short, age 82, of Lineville, will be held on Monday August 4, 2025 at 2:00 P.M. at Benefield Funeral Home in Lineville with Rev. Christy Noren-Hentz officiating. Burial will follow in the Oak Grove Methodist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Short was a native and lifelong resident of Clay County. He graduated from Lineville High School Class of 1964. He was an outstanding football player. Gerald played halfback on the 1961 Championship Team and later had his jersey retired. After graduation Gerald attended Jacksonville State University, before beginning his 32 year career with Alabama Power Company as a line crew foreman. Mr. Short enjoyed Aggie, LSU and Auburn football, running his cattle farm, especially riding his Ranger all over the pasture as often as he could and hunting and fishing.

He is survived by his wife; Carolyn B. Short of Lineville, one daughter; Rhonda Hanners of Lineville, one son; David Short of Lineville and his close friend, Ashley Thrower, one sister; JoAnn Walker (Jim) of Fort Walton Beach, Fla, and two grandchildren; Maggie Hanners (Payton Hornsby) and Mallory Hanners.

He was preceded in death by his parents; James Herbert Short and Bessie Price Short, one brother; James F. Short, one grandson; Matthew Trace Hanners, and his son in law Jimmy Hanners.

Active pallbearers will be Payton Hornsby, Scottie Hudson, Rick Whaley, Tyler Jordan, Brad Walker, and Stanley Hurst.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Truman Anderson, Alton Thompson, John Willie Price, Buster Hurst, and his caregiver Shirletta Davis.

The family will receive friends at Benefield Funeral Home in Lineville on Monday August 4th, 2025 from 12:00 P.M. until service time at 2:00 P.M.

FLOWERS WILL BE ACCEPTED BUT THE FAMILY PREFERS DONATIONS BE MADE TO THE “OAK GROVE CEMETERY FUND” in Gerald’s memory. Contributions may be mailed to 4011 Oak Grove Rd. Lineville, Al. 36266
