George K. Nelson Mr. George K. Nelson 93, resident of 2nd Avenue in Columbia, TN died March 20, 2021 at NHC Maury Regional.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday March, 24, 2021 at 3:00 PM at Oakes and Nichols with Reverend Len Carrel officiating. The family will visit with friends from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at the funeral home.  Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery with military honors provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19.  Condolence may be extended online at www.oakesandnichols.com.

Mr. Nelson was born on November 18, 1927 in Lakeville, Minnesota.  To the late George M Nelson and Esther C. Senstad Nelson.

He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and was stationed in Frankfurt, Germany where he met his wife-to-be who was in the Women’s Army Corps.  They were married on June 27, 1953 and after 20 years in Minnesota moved to Columbia in 1973.  He was employed by Maury Federal Savings & Loans and retired after 17 years as Loan Officer and Appraiser.  He served as Deacon and Elder of Zion Presbyterian Church and was an active member of the Rotary Club since 1993.

Survivors include his wife of sixty-seven years, Gladys Imogene Caulk Nelson of Columbia; two daughters; Dawn C. Nelson of Columbia and Barbara C. (Brian) Shannon of Columbia; grandsons, Justin C. Chappell (Michelle) of Seminary, Mississippi, Nathan L. Shannon (Allie Kreisel) of Columbia; two great-granddaughters Maddie Chappell, and Natalee Shannon and a great-grandson, Austin Chappell; nephew Paul (Gerry) Leidner of Burnsville, Minnesota; niece Kathryn (Jim) Hoeppner of Lakeville, Minnesota, several great nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Doris Marie Leidner and a niece, Kathleen (Walter) Strese.

Serving as pallbearers will be;  Tony Holcomb, Shannon Holcomb, Don Gibson, Brian Shannon, Justin Chappell, Nathan Shannon, Branden Vaughan and Monty Dunn.

Honorary Pallbearers; Ted Jacobs, Mike Flynt, Kate and Jimmy Couch, Margaret and Norman Harris, Matt Boshers, Ben Vaughan, Beau Vaughan, Theresa and Kevin Chappell. Former members of Jimmy Couch’s Sunday School Class at Zion Presbyterian Church

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Nashville Rescue Mission, 639 Lafayette Street, Nashville, TN 37203 or Rose Hill Cemetery, PO Box 1015 Columbia, TN 38402.
