George Edward Douglas Sperry, 88, of Smithville, Tennessee, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 19, 2026, at The Webb House.
Born on April 20, 1938, in Detroit, Michigan, George was the son of the late George and Robina Sperry. He graduated from Wayne State University and Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania before embarking on a career in education that would help shape the lives of countless students.
George dedicated 37 years to teaching, spending most of his career as a math teacher at Pierce Middle School in Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan. A beloved educator, he was known for his unwavering commitment to his students and his quirky and creative teaching style. Beyond the classroom, George coached numerous sports teams, led the school’s chess team, served as a baseball instructor for Detroit Parks & Recreation, and coached Little League teams for many years, sharing his lifelong love of sports with generations of young athletes.
A devoted man of faith, George was an active member of Peace Lutheran Church in Detroit, Michigan, where he taught Sunday School for many years and served as a trained Stephen Minister, offering compassion and encouragement to those in need of support. His spirit of service extended beyond the church. George donated more than 20 gallons of blood to the American Red Cross over his lifetime, an extraordinary gift that reflected his desire to help others. He also cherished the many family camping adventures with the “Peace Campers,” creating treasured memories on seasonal weekend trips throughout Michigan for many years.
Following his retirement in 2000, George and his beloved wife, Dawn, moved to Smithville, Tennessee. He continued substitute teaching for several years and quickly became a familiar face throughout the DeKalb County High School community, enthusiastically supporting local student-athletes. A proud Rotarian and faithful attendee of First United Methodist Church in Smithville, George found great joy in cheering on not only his younger cousins at DCHS, but countless other athletes as well. Whether in a packed gymnasium or on the sidelines of a ballfield, he was often the friendliest and most enthusiastic fan.
George’s greatest joy was his family. A devoted husband of 49 years to Dawn, he treasured every opportunity to travel and spend time with their children and grandchildren. He was the kind of grandfather who got down on the floor to play, invented imaginative board games, and attended every sporting event he could. Even during his final days, he eagerly watched videos of his grandson pitching in tournament games, often ready with a few encouraging pointers.
George was also an avid Detroit sports fan whose loyalty to the Tigers never wavered. He possessed an encyclopedic knowledge of sports trivia and an unconventional sense of humor that delighted friends, family, and caregivers alike. He could always be counted on for a clever joke or a playful pun, guaranteed to earn either hearty laughter or a good-natured groan.
His final three years were spent at The Webb House, where he deeply appreciated the kindness and compassion of the staff. In return, he brightened their days with his quick wit, warm spirit, and endless word play and sports trivia!
George was preceded in death by his parents, George and Robina Sperry, and his beloved son, David.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 49 years, Dawn Sperry; his children, George (Donna), Martin (Maureen), James (Allison), Nonny Elayne, and Susannah (Sean); his many cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his special aunt, Florence Brown; his sister, Charlotte Whitelock; his sister-in-law, Suzanne Prater; and many extended family members, former students, friends, and neighbors whose lives were enriched by knowing him.
George will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather and uncle, gifted teacher, faithful servant, and enthusiastic sports fan. His kindness, humor, generosity, and love for others left a lasting impression on all who were fortunate enough to know him.
A memorial service will be held at Peace Lutheran Church in Detroit, Michigan on Sunday, August 16, 2026, at 3pm.
