“Front Porch Stories: From York Bluff to Sheffield”

  SHEFFIELD – The Colbert County Tourism and Convention Bureau continues its special program series with “Front Porch Stories and Backyard Tales: From York Bluff to Sheffield.” The May 15, 2022, event will take place at 2 pm outdoors in Gordon Park, which is located next to the historic Standpipe in Sheffield, Alabama.

 

Local historian Jimmy Austin’s presentation will discuss the meeting of Andrew Jackson and Chickasaw Chief George Colbert and how it spurred interest to start a town in the location of present day Sheffield, Alabama. York Bluff was later laid out by John Coffee under the guidance of Andrew Jackson. Learn more about the influences of John Coffee, James Jackson, and others in the area and what led to the eventual settlement of Sheffield.

 

The Standpipe is located at 1399 N Montgomery Avenue, Sheffield, Alabama. Gordon Park lies adjacent to it along Gordon Drive. Please bring a chair to this free event.
