Fred Sloss, Jr. was born January 4th, 1937, to the late Fred Sloss, Sr. and Bernice Hall in Athens, AL. Deacon Fred Sloss, Jr. transitioned to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 13th, 2023, at his home. He is preceded in death by his father, Fred Sloss, Sr., mother, Bernice Hall, stepmother, Maxine Sloss, stepdad, Boyd Hall, brothers Bobby Jo Sloss, Charles Sloss and Dr. Jimmy Sloss.
He attended and graduated from Trinity High School in 1958 where he was a star football player. He was the chaplain in the Athens Community Choir for many years. In the early 80’s, he served on the Board of Directors of Athens Youth Peewee Football League.
He married his lovely wife, Emma Mayberry Sloss and they recently celebrated 61 years of marriage. To this union two children were born, Tracie and Fred Sloss, III.
Fred gave his life to Christ at an early age, at Saint Luke M.B Church where he served faithfully as a deacon, trustee, choir member and usher until his health begin to fail. Fred was truly a man of faith. He would often say, “when I leave here, don’t tell them I’m dead, but just another soldier has gone home to be with the Lord”.
He was employed at Sunbeam Bakery for almost forty years. He believed in working. After retirement he opened Sunrise Janitorial Services and still found time for his favorite hobbies, fishing and gardening. He would spend hours on the river with friends, David Lane and Billy Houston, both deceased. Anyone who knew him, knew his garden was his passion. He would plant and pick from sunrise to sunset until his health wouldn’t allow it anymore.
He leaves to cherish his memory his loving and devoted wife of 61 years, Emma; two children – Tracie Sloss and Fred Sloss, III (Marsha); siblings, Francis Pride (late James Pride), Emily Carpenter, Dr. Wade D. Sloss (Bette), Sylvia (the late Charles Sloss) and Thelma (the late Dr. Jimmy Sloss); a host of in-laws, Teresa Mayberry, Shirley Mayberry (the late Leo Mayberry), Edward Mayberry (Frances), Jessie Mayberry, Jr. (Denise), Bettye Gilbert, Robert Mayberry (Rhonda), Donald Mayberry (Vicki); a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
