Fred Nimrod Underwood, Jr.

Fred Nimrod Underwood, Jr., 92, of Decatur, Alabama, passed away at home surrounded by family on October 20, 2022. He was the son of Fred Sr. and Mary Willie Wilson Underwood of Russellville. Fred studied architecture at Auburn University, where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha Order. Fred’s architectural legacy of schools, churches, municipal buildings, and homes remains a part of the Decatur landscape. A veteran of the Army and an active First United Methodist Church member, Fred served in his church choir and several leadership positions. He served as Rotary Club President and as a leader/volunteer in numerous other Decatur organizations over many decades. “Papa Fred” is survived by his wife of 66 years, Louise; his brother, Charles R. Underwood of Marietta; Children Julie (Bob DeMoss) of Navarre, FL, Lisa (Chip Myers) of Knoxville, TN, Bess (Ronnie Whorton) of Birmingham, and John (Stefanie Underwood) of Decatur. Grandchildren Nathan (Pam), Will (Lauren), Nick (Nicky), Hannah (Phil), Charlie (Sara), Wilson (Samantha), Anna Louise (Alex), Wiley, Sam (Hannah), Emmie, Jack, and Lu Lu; Great-grandchildren Harper, Henry, Chloe, Mary-Cooper, Hope, Sophie, James, and Poppy. A memorial service will be held for Fred on Tuesday, October 25, 2022, at 1 PM at First United Methodist Church of Decatur. Visitation is from 11 AM – 12:30 PM. The family would be honored if donations in Fred’s name were made to The Salvation Army (Decatur) or Hospice of the Valley.
