Fred E. Johnson – Obituary

Fred E. Johnson, age 87, of Sheffield, died December 13, 2013. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 21, at 2:00 p.m., at the First Untied Methodist Church of Sheffield. Reverend Zeke Haselden will be officiating. The family will receive friends for visitation from 1:00 p.m. until service time.

Mr. Johnson was born March 23, 1926, in Howard County, Indiana, and lived in the Shoals area since 1948. Fred was a member of the First United Methodist of Sheffield, Howard Jaggers’ Sunday School Class, and the Tennessee Valley Art Association. He was a past president of the Sheffield Lions Club.

Fred was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel Branum Johnson; parents, Everett Frank and Florence Downhour Johnson; brothers, Delbert and Ned; and step-parents, Harvey Michael and Evelyn Dolby Johnson. He is survived by a sister-in-law, Betty Johnson, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He graduated from Purdue University with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and worked with Reynolds Metals, Alloys plant for 36 years. He retired in 1985 as an Engineering Supervisor and was fortunate to have participated in many of the modernization and expansion programs during his tenure.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and collecting Indian artifacts in the Tennessee River Valley. Fred also enjoyed contract bridge.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Friends of the Sheffield Public Library or a favorite charity.
