Former Decatur Police Officer Charged With Murder In Shooting Death Of Stephen Perkins

DECATUR-The Morgan County Grand Jury returned an indictment of Murder against Mac Bailey Marquette, 23 on Thursday, December 4, 2023.  The booking process took 1.5 hours and took place Thursday. The Morgan County Sheriff’s Office held the information at the request of the DA’s Office until this morning’s press conference so all the details could be given at one time.

custody by Sheriff Ron Puckett as he turned himself in at the Morgan County Jail.

Marquette was arrested on a Grand Jury warrant for murder. He was booked into the Morgan County Jail. Bond $30,000.

On Tuesday, December 26, 2023, ALEA turned over an ‘investigative file’ to the Morgan County District Attorney Scott Anderson’s office with information about the Sept. 29 officer-involved shooting.

After months of protest and civil unrest the Morgan County District Attorney and has issued a statement concerning the arrest of one of the person’s involved in the shooting of Stephen Perkins. DA Scott Anderson said former officer Mac Bailey Marquette, 23 has been charged with the murder of Perkins.  Marquette was taken into custody by the Morgan County Sheriff on Thursday after turning himself into authorities. He was booked on a Grand Jury warrant for murder with a bond set at $30,000, but has since bonded out.

39-year-old Perkins was killed by police in the early morning hours of September 29th in 2023 following an incident surrounding a vehicle repossession.

Marquette was one of four officers disciplined by Decatur Mayor Tab Bowling on December 7 for the shooting death of Perkins. At the time, Bowling said he had terminated three officers and suspended a fourth.

The city later identified the officers disciplined as Marquette, Christopher Mukadam, Joey Williams and Sergeant Vance Summers. The city has not specified which three officers were fired and which one was suspended.
