FLORENCE-The city of Florence announced the passing of  former City Council President Dick Jordan, 80 today.  The statement below was issued by the city of Florence detailing the accomplishments of Dick Jordan:

Honoring the Legacy of William “Dick” Jordan
The City of Florence mourns the passing of William “Dick” Jordan, a man who dedicated a lifetime of service to our community. Since 1979, Dick has served in numerous leadership roles within our municipal government, leaving a lasting legacy through the many projects he spearheaded.

The renovated Florence Harbor stands as one of his many contributions, offering a marina, boat slips, a playground, and a restaurant for citizens and visitors to enjoy year-round. He was also instrumental in developing our Public Library, ensuring that Florence had one of the most advanced libraries in North Alabama.

During his time on the Council, eight new residential neighborhoods and much of our downtown business district were added to the National Register of Historic Places. Under his leadership, Tennessee Street and Downtown Florence saw significant improvements through streetscape projects under his leadership. As Mayor, Dick worked closely with City and County officials to drive economic growth, helping to bring the Shoals Robert Trent Jones Golf Course and the Marriott Hotel to our city.

As Mayor Betterton reflects: “Community leadership is the courage, creativity, and capacity to inspire participation, development, and sustainability for strong communities.” Dick Jordan truly embodied this vision. His decades of leadership and dedication have made Florence a better place, and his impact will be felt for generations.

Our thoughts, prayers, and support are with his family during this time of loss. ~ The City of Florence
