FLORENCE-Florence/Lauderdale Convention and Visitors Bureau joins hundreds of cities, states and travel businesses countrywide in recognition of National Travel and Tourism Week by hosting Visitor Appreciation Day.

From noon to 4 p.m. on Friday, May 12, complimentary ice cream, popcorn and other refreshments will be served during a screening of the documentary “Muscle Shoals” at noon and “The Miracle Worker” following at 2 p.m. Attendees will have the chance to enter to win giveaways from local hotels and businesses while the Florence/Lauderdale Tourism Gift Shop will be running specials.

This weeklong celebration highlights the value and scope of the nation’s travel and tourism industry and its economic and social contributions. During 2016, visitors to Lauderdale County spent $238 million posting a 4.8% increase over 2015.

“We are approaching our third year anniversary in the Visitor Center and we want to invite visitors and locals, to celebrate our success in the Shoals travel and tourism industry,” said to Florence/Lauderdale Tourism Director of Operations, Alison Stanfield. “The Visitor Center is funded through lodging tax dollars and offers valuable information to visitors.  However, we want our local residents to feel a sense of ownership and pride and utilize the center on a frequent basis.”

Hotels, attractions, restaurants and shops are a small portion of the local businesses greatly impacted by travel to our region. Lauderdale County is in the top 10 counties statewide for most people employed in tourism, providing every household in the state a $444 tax saving annually.
