Florence Police Arrest Two Suspects On Felony Domestic Violence

FLORENCE-On Thursday, March 14 the Florence Police Department released a statement concerning two arrests for Domestic Violence involving DV Strangulation or Suffocation, 13A-6-138. Domestic violence by strangulation or suffocation is a Class B Felony.

“The First arrest was made at 4 pm when James D Offutt was arrested on Cox Creek Parkway. Mr. Offutt was involved in an argument with his girlfriend at her apartment on Helton Dr. The argument turned into a physical altercation when he pushed her. During the altercation, he choked her to the point of causing bruising and marks on her neck. During this time she was holding her child and would not let her leave the apartment. Mr. Offutt was transported to the Lauderdale County Detention Center for booking; he currently has a $9,000.00 bond and can bond after 5:45 on 3/15/2019.

The Second arrest was made at 5 pm when Rodney L Smith was arrested in the

400 block of N Oneal St. Mr. Smith was involved in an argument with his girlfriend. When she arrived at the residence, they are staying at he grabbed her in a choke hold and knocked her to the ground. He then continued to choke her until another person contacted the police. When officers arrived, they found Mr. Smith left the residence and was stopped a short distance away. After speaking with the victim, Mr. Smith was arrested and was transported to the Lauderdale County Detention Center for booking; he currently has a $5,000.00 bond and can bond after 5:45 on 3/15/2019.”
