SHEFFIELD – Five persons, one an infant, have been rushed to area hospitals tonight as a result of a head-on collision. Sheffield Police, Fire, and Alabama State Troopers responded to the scene at the intersection of South Montgomery Avenue and Jackson Highway shortly before 9:00 pm.
Three of the victims were rushed to Helen Keller Hospital and 2 were transported to Shoals Hospital, both within a mile of the crash scene. According to sources close to the investigation, possibly two of the victims, a female adult and the infant, were extremely critical. Authorities were not able to transport via helicopter any of the 5 to Huntsville Hospital’s Trauma Center because of a low cloud deck.
According to witnesses a Mercury Mountaineer with two male teenagers was northbound on South Montgomery turning left onto Jackson Highway. A silver compact sedan, traveling at an extremely high speed and with its hazard lights flashing, was approaching the intersection from the north. The Mountaineer SUV turned left into the path of the speeding sedan, resulting in the catastrophe.
None of the victims have been identified at the time of this writing, and their conditions are presently unknown.
