TUSCUMBIA-Prepare to be moved and inspired as the remarkable story of Helen Keller comes to life in The Miracle Worker, held on the grounds of the Helen Keller Home in Tuscumbia. This captivating play, staged at the outdoor theatre behind Ivy Green, depicts the extraordinary life of Helen Keller – from the discovery of her illness at a young age to her remarkable journey of learning and communication with the help of her devoted teacher Anne Sullivan.
The Miracle Worker showcases the indomitable spirit of Helen Keller and the transformative power of education and perseverance. Audiences will witness the pivotal moment, barely a month after Sullivan’s arrival at Ivy Green in March 1887, when Keller spells “w-a-t-e-r” into Sullivan’s hand as water flows from the well pump. This awe-inspiring scene serves as the climax of the play, symbolizing the breakthrough that would change Keller’s life forever.
Caroline Self, Director of The Miracle Worker, emphasizes, “For 62 years, people from all over the world have made the pilgrimage to Tuscumbia, Alabama, to experience The Miracle Worker. You can see William Gibson’s play anywhere, but at Ivy Green, you are steps away from where the miracle actually happened. Gibson visited Ivy Green several times before his death and provided counsel and support to our production here. He always said that the production at the Birthplace needed to be ‘the best production of this play
anywhere in the world.’ That is the bar we strive to meet each year.”
Recognized as the Official State Outdoor Drama for Alabama, The Miracle Worker has garnered acclaim and has been named a Top 20 Event by the Southeast Tourism Society. This enduring production continues to captivate audiences with its powerful storytelling and profound message of determination and triumph.
Helen Keller’s journey did not end with this miraculous breakthrough. She went on to become a world-renowned author, lecturer, and advocate for people with disabilities. Known as America’s First Lady of Courage, her legacy continues to inspire and empower individuals around the globe.
The gates of Ivy Green open at 7:00 p.m., allowing audiences to immerse themselves in the ambiance of this historic setting. The performances will commence at 8:00 p.m., taking spectators on an unforgettable journey into the life of Helen Keller.

Some of us have grown up at Ivy Green and played different roles along the way. All of us have fallen in love with this special place and this incredible story, and it is our privilege to share the story of Annie and Helen with our audiences. Tickets for The Miracle Worker are $20 for reserved seats and $15 for general admission. This year marks the 62nd season of this iconic production, with performances scheduled on the following dates: June 2, 3, 9, 10, 17, 23, 24, and July 7, 8, 14, and 15.
