Evelyn passed away peacefully on Sunday January 4th. She was born in Eagle Lake, Florida, to Calvin and Monnie Johnson who have both preceded her in death. She is survived by her sister, Katherine Johnson Pope (Melvin) of Tallahassee, FL and her husband, Dan Bingham Darden. They have five children, Randy (Lee) of Vincent, AL, Barry (Becky) of Houston, TX, Carol Gordon (Mike) of Fairhope, Joel of Little Rock, AR, and Paul of Chattanooga, TN. They have three grandchildren, Melissa of Houston, TX, Michelle Cook (Grant) of Nashville, TN and Tyler (Anna) of Chicago, IL.
Evelyn graduated from Florida State University after attending primary and high school in Winter Haven, FL. She earned her degree in Speech Pathology and moved to Atlanta where she met and married her husband of over 64 years, Dan. They settled in Birmingham and started a family. In 1965 with five children in tow, they then moved to Decatur. She had been active all of her life in the community and a generous homemaker. She was a past president and member of AAUW, past president and volunteer of The Decatur General Hospital Auxiliary, active in Central United Methodist Church, Friends of Wheeler Library, a Master Gardener, and volunteer with the Perdido Beach Firefighters.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday January 11th at 2 p.m. at Noland Hall on the campus of The Oaks on Parkwood in Bessemer. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to your local library or church in her honor.
