Evelyn Brooks Smith was called home to be with her God and Creator on Thursday morning, May 29, 2014.

Ms. Smith is survived by her two beloved children, Steven Anthony Smith and his wife, Linda, and Scott Dean Smith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Cecil Smith, her grandson, Nicholas Allen Smith, and her parents Simon and Ida Brooks. She also was preceded in death by her brother and sisters, Buford Brooks, Otilla Pounders, Exie Cummings, Fayrene Cummings, Vernie Bishop, Hubert Brooks, and Simon Brooks. She is also survived by her grandson, Seth Smith, and Nell Brooks Case, her sister.

Ms. Smith was born on a farm in Franklin County, Alabama. Ms. Smith was born into a loving family with loving and God-fearing parents and many brothers and sisters. She was known throughout the Franklin County community as a very diligent and hard worker. Ms. Smith was recognized as employee of the year at the H.D. Lee Company.

Ms. Smith was an avid flower and vegetable gardener. She was also a seamstress and a singer of conventional gospel music. Ms. Smith worked with Curtis Candy Company, Bell Telephone Company as a telephone operator, as a cosmetologist, and as a seamstress at H.D. Lee Company.

In recent months and in her final days, Ms. Smith fought very hard to cling to her life and to be there for her two sons and grandson. Ms. Smith fought the good fight and has now gone home to be with her Lord, God, and Savior.

Ms. Smith was very close to her family and friends. She strongly believed in the “Golden Rule” and treated others as she wanted to be treated. She put the needs of her family and friends above her own. She was the “Roc” of her family. Almost all family reunions in the past four decades took place at her home and farm in Phil Campbell, Alabama. She always knew of the activities and whereabouts of her beloved family and beloved friends. She loved to hear stories and tell stories regarding her loved ones.

Very special thanks to her physician, Dr. Webb, her niece, Rosemary Reeves, her nephew, Tim Case, her nurse, Janice Love, Candace Garner, and friends, Vera Collum and Jeanette Stein.

Visitation for Ms. Smith will be today from 5-8 p.m. at Akins Funeral Home.
