Evelyn Barton Hunter, 84, of Gardendale, passed away at UAB Hospital on December 31, 2025.
Evelyn was raised in the Cordova community, attending Indian Head School and Walker County High School. In her youth, she was active in the Young Women’s Auxiliary at the First Baptist Church. In the summer after high school, Evelyn worked at Yellowstone National Park. She graduated from Walker College and attended Jacksonville State College, majoring in history. She worked for Alagasco for several years before becoming a full-time homemaker.
A family viewing will be held on Monday, January 5th at 12:30 pm at Collins-Burke Funeral Home in Jasper followed by a graveside service at Sardis Cemetery, officiated by Clay Tankersley. Pallbearers will be Kirk Hunter, Emma Godwin, Nathan Godwin, Matt Guiser, Steven Landrum, and Tyler Rigby.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, James Allen Hunter; parents James Marshall and Cora Lynn Root Barton; brother Warren Barton; and sister Joann Barton Green.
Evelyn is survived by her devoted son Russ Hunter (Beth) and grandson Kirk, of Hayden, AL. Evelyn enjoyed piano, puzzles, sewing, and spending time with her family. She will be deeply missed.
