Visitation for Euverla Ruth “Byrd” Kerr, 81, of Hartselle will be this evening from 5 to 7 at Peck Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Friday at 10 a.m. in the chapel followed by internment in Hartselle City Cemetery.
Byrd Kerr, who died Tuesday, January 14, 2014 at her residence, was born November 28, 1932, in Albertville to Charles and Louise Cherry and grew up in Gadsden. She met her beloved husband of 62 years, Elmo Kerr, in Gadsden when she was 15 years old and they were married on June 21, 1951. The family moved to Hartselle in 1962. Byrd Kerr was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Hartselle for 51 years. Elmo recently preceded Byrd into heaven on November 26, 2013, to prepare for Byrd’s arrival.
Byrd Kerr was very proud of her service as secretary at Burleson Elementary School in Hartselle for 24 years, where she loved and was loved by hundreds of now grown children and by teachers and staff. She and Elmo retired 22 years ago and enjoyed square dancing, travel, visiting with family, and tailgating at Hartselle Tiger football games where their grandson Russell Powell played Center. Byrd always was a dedicated mother and wife. She was beloved by students, family, and friends and well known for her tender gentle spirit, big bright smile, and genuine concern and care for others.
She is survived by her daughter, Carol Powell (Randy) of Hartselle; son, Steve Kerr (Jean) of Atlanta; grandsons, Gaines Kerr and Russell Powell; and sister, Maxine Hemrick of Gadsden. She was lovingly cared for during her last months by caregivers and dear friends, Susie and Shirley Rodgers.
Pallbearers will be Gaines Kerr, Russell Powell, Dwain Wallace, Mike Sparkman, Harry Houston and Bill King.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in memory of Byrd Kerr to the Good Samaritan Fund for Needy Children at the First United Methodist Church, 210 Hickory Street SE, Hartselle, AL 35640.
