On April 9, 2021, Ethel Houk, much loved mother and grandmother, passed away at the age of 102.
She retired after teaching 25 years at Madison County Elementary School and then began traveling the world, visiting all 50 states and several countries. She was always quick to tell her friends that she lived a long, full, good life. She wondered why God didn’t take her because she was “ready to go.” Now, He has taken her, and she is with all her family and friends who love her as much as we do.
Ethel is survived by her daughter, Gayle Boersma; granddaughter and husband, Jan and Kirk Boley; great-granddaughter, Frankie Boley, great-grandson; Walter Boley; son, Kenneth Douglas; grandson, Mike Douglas; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth M. Houk; her son, Charles Keith Houk; her son-in-law, Garrett C. Boersma; her parents, Issac and Lulu Humphrey; and 12 siblings.
In lieu of flowers, Ethel’s family suggests memorial donations may be made to Gurley United Methodist Church, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, or your favorite charity.
Visitation will be on Sunday, April 11 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Berryhill Funeral Home. Her funeral service will be on Monday, April 12 at 2 p.m. with Mary Louise Stowe officiating. Interment will be at Maple Hill Cemetery.
