Mr. Errol Dewayne JonesErrol Dewayne Jones, 57, of Tuscaloosa, Alabama peacefully transitioned on December 2, 2024 at Madison Hospital in the presence of his family. Born on May 13, 1967 in Huntsville, Alabama, Errol was the oldest son of the late Dr. Willie Clyde Jones and Kay Frances Rice Jones. Growing up in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, alongside his two siblings, he was active at Bailey Tabernacle C.M.E Church, where he served on the Usher Board and the Secretary to the Sunday School. In 2000, he joined St. Paul C.M.E Church in Russellville, Alabama, where he was a member of the Male Chorus and Mass Choir. He lived a life dedicated to his family, education, and coaching, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew him.

After graduating from Tuscaloosa County High School in 1985, Errol’s love for football earned him a scholarship to Alabama A&M University, where he earned his SIAC Championship title in 1989, and his Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education Mathematics in 1990. He later achieved a Master’s in Education from A&M in 2005. He was an Eagle Scout and a proud member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. and The Black Coaches Association. His passion for teaching and coaching was evident throughout his career. He inspired countless students both in the classroom and on the field.

Errol’s coaching career spanned decades and included significant achievements. Beginning his coaching and teaching career at South Girard Middle School, he served as the Defensive Coordinator and Math teacher. He has since been at Russellville High School, Alabama A&M University, Paul W. Bryant High School, Deshler High School, Grissom High School, Fairfield, Bessemer, and retired from R.A. Hubbard High School in 2019. Errol’s leadership contributed to winning seasons, record-setting performances, and the development of many young athletes who thrived under his guidance. He had an unwavering dedication to helping his students succeed academically and personally.

In July 1992, Errol married Colette Waddell of Queens, New York. Together, they raised four children who were the light of his life.

Errol was admired for his towering presence, both physically and as a mentor. His deep commitment to family, education, and athletics will be cherished and remembered by all who were fortunate to know him.

Errol’s family, friends, and students will forever remember his dedication, warmth, and unwavering commitment to his community. His legacy as both a mentor and an educator will become a source of lifelong inspiration.

He is survived by his loving mother, Kay Frances Rice Jones; his daughters: Kiera Symone’ Jones (30), Aeriel Nicole Jones (30), and Devin Dene’ Jones (26); his son, Philip-Errol Dewayne (EJ) Jones (20); and their mother, Colette Jones. He also leaves behind his brother, Kennard Jones; his sister, Harriet Jones; nieces: Nya Gordon, Ava Jones, Dacia Waddell; and brother-in-law Rafique Waddell. A host of extended relatives, friends, and students also mourn his passing.

Funeral service will be 12:00 noon, Saturday, December 14, 2024 at The Fellowship of Faith Church (3703 North Memorial Pkwy NW, Huntsville, AL 35810) with Elder Robert Heath, Jr. officiating. Interment will be in the Meadowlawn Garden of Peace.

Public viewing will be held from 12:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m., Friday, December 13, 2024 and 8:30 a.m. until 10:00 a.m., Saturday, December 14, 2024 at the Royal Funeral Home.
