Erma Sue Comer, 94, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 8, 2026. Born on September 20, 1931, to Ira Crump, and Lillian Sue Caldwell Crump in Sherman, Mississippi, Sue lived a life rooted in faith, family, and service to her community. A graduate of Sherman High School and Itawamba Junior College, she began a long career in manufacturing as a seamstress. In 1963, she began her career. Through multiple location changes over the years, she remained dedicated to her work until retiring in 1996. On December 14, 1956, she married, Ernest Comer, and together they shared nearly 58 years of marriage until his passing in 2014.
Sue was a faithful servant of the Lord and a longtime, active member of Sherman Baptist Church, where she was especially known for her years of devoted service as the Sunday School Secretary. She also gave generously of her time as a Friend of the Library and as head of the Sherman Cemetery Committee, helping preserve and care for the community she loved. Her faith was central to her life, and she could often be found reading her Bible.
In her quieter moments, Sue enjoyed gardening, word searches, reading, and cheering on college sports, especially Duke Basketball. She had a special love for animals and was known for falling in love with her grandchildren’s dogs, often ending up keeping them as her own. Most recently, Marley held a special place in her heart and was lovingly adored and pampered.
Sue is survived by her two children, Fran Buchanan and Stephan E. Comer both of Sherman; two grandchildren, Sam Buchanan (Taylor) of Belden, and Grace Buchanan (CJ Russell) of Knoxville, Tennessee; two great-grandchildren, Law and Judd Buchanan; brother, Lester Crump of Tupelo; sister-in-law, Callie Crump of Tupelo; nieces and nephews; and her beloved fur baby, Marley.
