Erlene Elrod Moore, Belmont, Mississippi, was born in 1924 in Halltown in Franklin County, Alabama, and died Saturday, Jan. 17, 2015, at Southern Magnolia in Golden, Mississippi. She was 90 years old.
Erlene graduated from Red Bay High School, Red Bay, Alabama, in the Class of 1942, and went on to attend business and secretarial schools in Atlanta, Georgia, Nashville, Tennessee, and at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., where she worked in the Pentagon for the U.S. Department of War until after World War II ended in 1945.
She returned to Alabama and began work in 1947 at the Bank of Red Bay (now Community Spirit Bank) and worked there for 40 years until retiring as senior vice president on Dec. 31, 1987. In later years, she continued to serve the bank by serving on the Board of Directors of the Community Spirit Bank in Belmont. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Belmont.
Services will be Tuesday, Jan. 20, 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Belmont with Brother Ray Burks officiating. Burial will be in Belmont Memory Gardens. Deaton Funeral Home, Belmont, will be in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include two daughters, Lynn Moore Maroon (Mark), of Belmont, and Julie Moore Woodcock (Barry), of Smiths Grove, Kentucky; two stepdaughters, Ruth Moore Rester (Kelly), of Silver Creek, Mississippi, and Peggy Moore Sparks, of Belmont; son-in-law, Don Gattis, of Dennis; two grandchildren, John Mark and Claire Maroon; nine stepgrandchildren, Jeff Rester, Chet Rester, Lisa Sparks Clarin, Tracy Sparks Eubanks, Amy Sparks Goss, Matthew Hargett, Maria Pounders, Joel Hargett and Daniel Gattis; 12 stepgreat-grandchildren; three stepgreat-great-grandchildren; sister, Eva Barnes; three sisters-in-law, Jean Elrod, Dorothy Elrod and Ivy Elrod; 27 nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Talmadge R. “Pet” Moore, her parents, Simuel Hector and Mary Elizabeth Elrod, stepdaughter, Sherry Moore Gattis; son-in-law, Gene Sparks; three brothers, Melvin Elrod, Robert “Tom” Elrod and William Carlos Elrod; two sisters, Lorene Ledbetter and Sammie Nelson.
Pallbearers will be John Mark Maroon, Matthew Hargett, Joel Hargett, Scott Eubanks, Mike Pounders and Phil Byram.
Visitation will be Monday, Jan. 19, 5-8 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Belmont, and from 9 a.m. until service time Tuesday.
