Epps (Matt) Edwin Matthews IV, 37, of Shelbyville, TN, passed away unexpectedly on January 15, 2022. Matt was born on July 31, 1984, to Epps and Shirley Matthews in Murfreesboro, TN. Matt graduated from Smyrna High School in 2002, he went on to study Science at Motlow State Community College.
Matt is a loving and dedicated father to his two girls, Sidney and Amy. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, aviation, science, reading, and relaxing with his family for family movie nights. Matt was a lover of animals, especially his dogs Sadie and Twiggy. Matt was always a very curious person about the world around him, going back to when he was a little boy asking his mom questions that couldn’t possibly be answered. He never lost that curiosity for life.  Matt was a compassionate person that cared about others around him. It’s impossible to describe Matt in such few words but he was a remarkable person with a contagious sense of humor and the ability to make others around him laugh. He will be tremendously missed in this life by his girls and those that loved him.
Matt was predeceased by his parents, Epps Edwin Matthews III and Shirley Tucker Matthews, grandparents Epps Edwin Matthews Jr and Eleanor Matthews; Perry Tucker and Mattie Tucker, and great aunt Jean McKnight. He is survived by his children Sidney and Amy Matthews, their mother Jessica Matthews, sister Susan Matthews, partner Ralph Smith, nephew Darien Smith, half-brother John Puckett, along with nieces Erica Bowman and Amanda Puckett, nephew Jonathan Puckett, uncle Andy Matthews, and many dear friends.
Visitation will be held at Woodfin Funeral Chapel in Smyrna, TN on January 20, 2022, from 11 – 1 pm with the celebration of life for the immediate family following. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in memory of Matt Matthews to Herren Project P.O. Box 131, Portsmouth, RI, 02871 or online at www.herrenproject.org/donate.
