TUSCUMBIA-Families can create their own pieces of art, inspired by famous artists, at Summer Saturdays at the Tennessee Valley Museum of Art. Each Saturday through July 17 (excluding a break for July 3) the museum will have a different art activity set up from

12 p.m. through 2 p.m. Families can drop in during that time period to create artwork such as Picasso-style self portraits or Warhol-style pop art. Children must be accompanied by an adult at the museum.

Museum curator Jonathan Cain, who is also an art educator, has designed each activity to be approachable and scalable for skill and age.

“We provide a basic concept, show an example, and teach you some methods, but these projects are designed to be flexible and fun,” said Cain. “They are all hands-on vehicles for creativity, and are appropriate for young kids, teens, and adults. And we have coloring pages and drawing materials available for children too small to use scissors and glue.”

The only cost for Summer Saturdays is entry to the museum, which is $5 for adults, $3 for children/students, and free for members and for healthcare, education, and first response workers. An annual family membership is $50, which allows everyone in your family to participate in all Summer Saturdays activities, get free admission to the museum all year, and get discounts on workshops.

“Now is a great time for families to become members of the Tennessee Valley Art Association,” said marketing director Jennifer Butler Keeton. “In addition to getting free admission, your whole family will be able to enter art into our upcoming member show ArtWorks. This year, we are going to have a special exhibit for our young member artists, so your kids will get to have their art in a museum exhibition.”
