Elmer Hoyt “Red” Lewis, born in Huntsville, Alabama, died peacefully in his home on Sept. 21, 2023. Red was the son of John Lewis and Annie Mae Sparkman Lewis(both deceased) and the brother to Charles (Debbie) Lewis and Judy Childress. For 68 years, he was the loving husband of Nelda and devoted dad to Ron and Billy (both deceased). Red will be remembered as a faith filled man who had a contagious sense of humor.
Growing up in Huntsville, Red lived in Lincoln village. As a young adult, his parents bought a farm in Skyline. While living in Skyline and doing millwright work, Red met and married Nelda in 1955. They returned to Huntsville and Red worked for NASA. Red and Nelda raised their boys in an active Christian home as they were leaders in music ministry at Pulaski Pike Church of God. He had an active retirement enjoying mowing grass; his and countless others in need (at no charge). Later in his retirement he was devoted to building the largest VHS and DVD collection around.
Red is survived by his loving wife, Nelda; daughter in law, Sherry, grandkids: Robert (Erin) and Emily and two great grandchildren: June and Eva. The family would like to thank the Enhabit Hospice care team for their dedication and care.
Visitation will be held Sept. 23 from 9:30-11:00am with the funeral at 11:00 at Berryhill Funeral home.
