Ella Fair Mathis, age 100 of Decherd passed away March 25, 2024, at Elk River Nursing Center in Winchester. A Franklin County resident, she celebrated her 100th birthday on December 4, 2023. Birthday wishes were extended during the Thanksgiving holidays by family and friends. She was born Ella Fair Hunnicutt to George Avington and Annie Lee Bagwell Hunnicutt on December 4, 1923, in Berry, Alabama. Ella Fair moved several times between Alabama and Tennessee while attending public schools and later college. While living in Nashville, she met Brents Mathis, and they were soon married. They moved to Gatlinburg starting “Paintin’ Place”, a china painting shop, that lasted for many years. She was a talented artist and hat maker that won many awards at the Tennessee State Fair. She learned to paint china while in Nashville and taught many art and hat making classes, even teaching Brents how to paint! Ella Fair and Brents retired to Franklin County where they remained until they passed. She loved watching her Tennessee Vols Football and Basketball teams. She was a dedicated member of the Capital Hill Church of Christ. Ella Fair and her husband, Brents, helped start several congregations in West Tennessee where she loved to teach Sunday School to young children. Ella Fair will always be remembered for her wonderful sense of humor. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Brents Mathis; son, Richard Brents Mathis; four brothers, Chester, Norman, Elliott, and Edward Hunnicutt; four sisters, Harvin Hunnicutt, Louise Sweeney, Lillie Mae Harvin, and Catherine Terry. She is survived by several nieces and nephews; Ed (Linda) Hunnicutt, Sandra (Mike) Roggli, Debbie (John) Gravlee, Shelia Hunnicutt, Sam Hunnicutt, Paul (Mary) Hunnicutt, Jimmie Dean Fields, and Darlene (Jim) Maze; and extended family. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, March 27, 2024, at 1:00pm at Mt. Garner Cemetery in Decherd with Pastor Robert Tipps officiating.
