ATHENS-On January 6, 2025, Deputy Cheyanne Abernathy of the Limestone County Sheriff’s Office completed a report on an incident involving the transmission of unsolicited obscene material to a minor. Upon further investigation, Investigator Steven Ferguson and Captain Caleb Durden identified the suspect as Jordan Wesley Brooks, 27, of Elkmont, Alabama.

On January 8, 2025, Brooks was located and approached by the investigators. Upon realizing he was being confronted, Brooks attempted to destroy critical evidence by performing a factory reset on his phone. Despite his efforts, investigators were able to gather sufficient evidence linking him to the crime. Brooks subsequently confessed to transmitting obscene material to a child and distributing pornography to minors.

The Limestone County Sheriff’s Office urges all parents to remain vigilant about the dangers associated with children’s internet and social media use. As technology advances, it is essential to remember that allowing your child access to the internet provides a gateway to the world and potentially dangerous individuals. Parents are encouraged to monitor the apps their children use, the games they play, and the people they interact with online.
“I want to assure our community that we take any threat to the safety of our children very seriously. Thanks to the diligent work of Deputy Abernathy, Investigator Ferguson, and Captain Durden, we swiftly identified and apprehended the individual responsible for this heinous crime. This case is a stark reminder of the importance of staying attentive and proactive regarding our children’s safety, especially in the digital world. I urge every parent to monitor their children’s online activity and take every precaution to protect them from harm. Together, we can continue to work to protect our children and prevent the exploitation of our youth.” ~ Sheriff Joshua McLaughlin
