Edgar Erwin Sumners, age 82, passed away peacefully at his beloved home in the Cedar Grove community on Tuesday, November 3, 2026.Born in Bunker Hill, Tennessee, Edgar grew up in the area and graduated from Giles County High School in 1962. A dedicated provider, he spent 37 years working for the Maremont Gabriel Corporation, serving as a supervisor for many of those years before his well-earned retirement in 1999.
Beyond his career, Edgar’s true passion was the land. He spent his entire life doing what he loved most: farming and raising cows. He was also an avid quail hunter and a proud member of the Giles County Quail Hunters Association. Edgar was a man who truly never met a stranger. He possessed a vibrant spirit and an open heart, loving nothing more than a good conversation with anyone he crossed paths with. His daily routines brought immense joy to his life, whether he was spending hours on the phone catching up with friends or driving around the neighborhood in his little truck to check on the community.
An avid sports fan, Edgar loved watching baseball and softball, and he spent several years sharing his passion by coaching in the women’s league. In his later years, one of his absolute favorite activities was going to “ride the horse” during his sessions with his therapist, Sarah Suddarth, whose care and companionship meant the world to him.
Edgar was a man who loved giving back to those who helped him. Following his diagnosis with glioblastoma in 2017, he ate hedgeapples every day, and his doctors always told him he was a miracle. He deeply loved sharing his hedgeapples and teaching others suffering from cancer how to use them
He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Linda Bailey Sumners; his children, Marsha McComiskey (Mike), Jason Sumners (Sherry), and Leigh Ann Villanueva; his six grandchildren, Kate McComiskey, Hannah Trahin (John), Bailey Clark (Bobby), Isaac Sumners (Ella), Ethan Sumners (Macey), and Zoe Villanueva; his great-grandchild, Jace Clark; and his special nephews, Zach and Brewer Bailey. Edgar was incredibly proud of all his children and grandchildren, and his love for his family was his greatest joy. Other survivors include his sisters, Ann Adair (Bud) of Lewisburg and Arlene Hawthorne of Slidell, LA; his brother, Gary Sumners; step grandchildren Olivia Randolph, Amber Stack, Garret Clark and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, William and Virgie Sue Sumners; his brothers, Sylvester Sumners, Wayne Sumners, and Joe Mack Sumners; and his sister, Joyce Bunting.
Visitation will be 11am to 2 pm, Friday, November 6, 2026, at Carr & Erwin Funeral Home with Funeral Services to follow at 2 pm. Interment will be in Giles Memory Gardens.
