Edgar Allen Poe, 99, of Florence, after a long life of service to God, went to be with his Lord on May 11, 2014. He was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church, music director and deacon for many years, taught Sunday school classes, was a volunteer for the Underwood Petersville Community Center; and was retired from Reynolds Metals Company where he was a member of the Teamsters Union. He loved singing, gardening, playing music, and carpentry work. He was loved by all who knew him for his honesty and Christian walk.
Visitation was last evening at Greenview Funeral Home. The funeral service will be today, Tuesday, May 13, 2014 at 11 a.m. at Emmanuel Baptist Church with Brother Daniel Michael and Brother Ronnie Jones officiating. The body will be placed in the church one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in Providence Cemetery in Parrish, Alabama at 4 p.m.
Mr. Poe was preceded in death by his first wife and the mother of his children, Audrey Lollar Poe; parents, Johnny T. and Alice Courington Poe; sisters, Ada Poe, Ollie Thompson (Glenn), Grace Hamner (Harold), Johnnie Ruth Sartain (Arthur); son-in-law, John Springer; great-grandson, Shane Poe, step-daughter, Linda Lindsey; second wife, Erma Jones Fleming Poe; step-great-grandson, Josh Phillips.
He is survived by his sons, Edgar Donald Poe (Juaneece) of Florence, Rodger Bruce Poe (Diane) of Niceville, FL; daughter, Eda Springer of Florence; ten grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; sixteen great-great-grandchildren; numerous step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren, and step-great-great-grandchildren.
Active pallbearers will be grandsons, Danny Poe, David Springer, Robert Poe, Leslie Bacon, Dustin Bacon, and Dylan McCreless.
Honorary pallbearers will be Steve Baskins, Ronald Loveless, Gary Day, William D. Ellison, Skyler Bacon, Isaac Springer, Daniel Aguire, Andrew Aguire, Cory McCreless, Austin Littleton, and Braden Tank.
