ATHENSAthens Police Chief Floyd Johnson released a statement concerning an early morning pursuit that took place around 8:30 AM on Thursday, August 18:

“This morning shortly after 8:30 our department had a pursuit with a vehicle driven by Garnell McCurley.

The pursuit started on West Washington Street and ended on Moyers Road. Investigator Mickey Hart was watching a residence for drug activity when a vehicle left the residence. When they saw Hart they started speeding away. When the vehicle finally stopped two males exited the vehicle and ran from the car.

Garnell McCurley was the driver and was taken into custody without incident. There was also a female in the car that was not charged.

McCurley was arrested on 2 failure to appear warrants one for no driver’s licenses and the other for speeding.

He was later charged with attempting to elude and carrying a pistol without a permit.

McCurley was later booked at the police department and transferred to the county jail.”
