Mr. Haygood was born on August 27, 1937 to Floyd and Ruth Haygood in Limestone County, Alabama. He spent 38 years as a member of Flint Baptist Church serving throughout his church community. He served as Chairman of the Deacons, Chairman of the Building Committee, a Sunday School Teacher, and Trustee of the Church. Earl served as a beacon of faith and compassion as a member of Builders for Christ of Meadowbrook Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama since 1997. He touched the lives of so many, providing to those in need, while serving on the Board of Directors for the Morgan County Baptist Association and their Disaster Relief Crew; volunteering for The Caring Place for the Baptist Association. He was a member of the Emmaus Community. With a fervent commitment to serving others, Earl was the Morgan County Disaster Chairman for the Red Cross where he was active for over 20 years; he worked 911 Relief in New York City; he worked relief for the Tsunami; in Sri Lanka, he worked multiple hurricane and tornado relief missions. He had his pilot license for many years and was a past member of the Civil Air Patrol and a Hamm Radio Operator.
Earl’s greatest joy and source of pride, however, was his family. He shared 68 beautiful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Mae, building a life filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories for their daughters. He was forever known by his living daughters as “Mr. Fixit.” One of his most special memories was a medical trip to Honduras with his son-in-law and grandsons. Earl enjoyed several hobbies including flying; collecting antique trains; and playing his guitar in a band called “Jan and the Old Man Band” with his daughter, Jan, where they played for various nursing homes.
Mr. Haygood was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Grady Jack Hagood; and sister, Vickie Joines.
Mr. Haygood is survived by his wife, Mae Haygood; daughters, Sharon Porter (Jim) of Guntersville, Alabama and Jan Lowery (Bob) of Decatur, Alabama; sisters, Shirley James, Tammy Alley, and Cherie Lewis; brother, Bill Hagood; grandsons, Trey Porter (Miriam Krimpmann) of Vienna, Austria; Tyler Porter (Erin) of Seattle, Washington; and Ryder Lowery of Decatur, Alabama; granddaughters, Morgan Lee Lowery of Birmingham, Alabama; Whitney Lowery of Decatur, Alabama; multiple nieces and nephews; and his loving fur baby Chloe. (aka Mollie)
Though he is no longer with us in body, Earl’s legacy of service, kindness, and love will endure in the hearts of all who knew him. While we mourn his passing, we take comfort in the knowing that he has been reunited with his loved ones in the embrace of eternal peace.
Pallbearers will be Jim Porter, Bob Lowery, Trey Porter, Tyler Porter, Jason Hagood, and Scott Shelton.
