Obituary of Ray Hutchison  Durward Ray Hutchison, age 96, passed away peacefully at his home on October 6, 2026. He was born on November 20, 1929, in Newport, Mississippi, to Schuler and Alice Hutchison. Although our hearts are broken, we find comfort in knowing that he is in the kingdom of heaven, rejoicing with his Lord and Savior.

Ray was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, friend, businessman, and community servant. He shared 69 years with his beloved wife, Carol Mabry Hutchison, who was the love of his life.

Ray was a big-hearted, hardworking, and disciplined man who never met a stranger. He had a special gift for finding the good in everyone he encountered. His faith in God was an important part of his life, and he loved his church and the people who became part of his church family.

Ray and Carol joined First United Methodist Church of Rainbow City in 1961, beginning a lifelong commitment to their church and its congregation. In 1967, Ray played an instrumental role in rebuilding and establishing the new First United Methodist Church of Rainbow City, helping create a lasting foundation for both the congregation and the community. He later served on numerous church committees, sang in the choir, and taught Sunday School for many years. Through these acts of service, Ray expressed a faith that was lived out in his generosity, dedication, and love for others.

For many years, Ray was the proud owner and operator of Gadsden Iron and Steel, where his strong work ethic and dedication were evident to all who knew him. After selling his business, Ray continued serving his community. He worked as the administrative assistant to Mayor Steve Means and later was employed by Culp Metals until his retirement.

His commitment to his community extended far beyond his business. He was an active member of the Gadsden Civitan Club for more than 40 years, serving as president for many of those years. He was also a longtime member of the Gadsden Quarterback Club.

Ray believed in giving back and spent many years serving his community through Manna and the Salvation Army. His service to others reflected the generous heart he carried throughout his life.

Outside of work and community service, Ray enjoyed the things that brought him joy. He loved golf, Alabama football, and the Atlanta Braves. He also cherished his furry companion, Punkin, who will miss him dearly.

Above all, Ray loved his family and treasured the time he spent with them. He leaves behind a lifetime of love, faith, hard work, friendship, and service. His greatest legacy will not be measured by the years he lived, but by the lives he touched and the love he gave so freely.

Ray is survived by his loving wife, Carol Mabry Hutchison; his children, Gary Hutchison (Pam), Judy Hutchison, Amy Mitchell (Mike), and Leslie Edwards (Ricky), his grandchildren, Jessica (Shawn) Bowman, Anna (Zach) Bothwell, Katie (Will) Hurst, Aaron Edwards (Kiara Molina), and Evan Edwards (Lily Weissend); and his great-grandchildren, Benjamin, Mikel, Hendrix, and Gianna Bothwell; Josey and Eloise Hurst; and Wyatt and Mabry Bowman.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Schuler and Alice Hutchison, and his brothers, Lindon, Delma, Carl, Felix, and Jimmy.

Ray never met a stranger, always looked for the good in others, and had a heart big enough to make people feel welcome. His family will carry his lessons, his laughter, his faith, and his love with them always.

The family extends special thanks to the Riverview Regional Medical Center CCU team and Gentiva Hospice for their compassionate care and support, and their caring sitter Rena Broadway.

He may no longer walk beside us, but his love will remain in our hearts forever. His life was a blessing, his memory a treasure, and he will be deeply missed.

Pall Bearers will be, Aaron Edwards, Evan Edwards, Benjamin Bothwell, Shawn Bowman, Will Hurst, and Zach Bothwell.

The family asks that any floral arrangements or monetary contributions may be delivered or made to the First Methodist Church of Rainbow City.

A visitation will be held on Friday October 9, 2026, at 2PM at the Methodist Church of Rainbow City; a service will follow at 3PM and a graveside will conclude services at the Southside Cemetery, in Southside, Alabama.
