FLORENCE-Florence Main Street wants to see downtown crawling with UNA students when they come back this Fall!
Main Street has partnered with the Student Government Association (SGA) and the University Program Council (UPC) of the University of North Alabama to host Lion Night 2015 on Friday, August 21st from 6pm until 11pm. Lion Night has become a special night for UNA students to explore downtown businesses and have a chance to win cash prizes.
Florence Main Street will be giving away $100 Downtown Dollars to 15 lucky UNA
students. In addition, SGA will be giving away not one but two UNA Scholarships in the amount of $1,000 and $500. Students can enter the drawing by putting their name in to the box provided at participating businesses. There is no purchase necessary! To sum it up, if a student visits 40 businesses that means they have 40 chances at winning a cash prize. Students must be present on Mobile Street at 8:30pm to win.
“Last year 800 to 1,000 students participated in Lion Night, which exceeded our expectations. I think by shaking things up a bit with more prize giveaways more students will come to downtown. We hope to see double the amount of students this year because this event is a grand opportunity for students to become aware of businesses they did not know existed and win a lot of money. Main Street is always looking at creative and fun ways to attract students to support our downtown merchants and I believe we have struck gold with Lion Night,” said Christina Hernandez, Event Coordinator for Main Street.
For the finale of Lion Night and after $3,000 has been gifted to students, Main Street and SGA invite all students and members of the community to join us for Laff with Us in Downtown a special event at the Shoals Community Theatre, 123 N Seminary Street, beginning at 9pm. The Laff Company, an improv comedy troup from Oxford, MS, is coming to downtown to make everyone laugh! Before they take the spotlight, local comedians of Florence Duell F. Aldridge and Brian Johnson, will perform as opening acts.
Admission to Laff with Us in Downtown is free to UNA students with a current Mane
Card. A limited number of tickets are available for general admission at the box office. $5 for adults, Children 12 years and younger get in free. The comedy show will be family friendly.
“UNA students often don’t know what is available to them in downtown Florence. Fun shopping, excellent food, and some of the best music around, and it’s all within walking distance to the campus. So Lion Night is all about showing off downtown Florence to the students and hoping that they have fun and come back to explore,” said Teryl Shields, Executive Director of Florence Main Street.
