Dorothy Jean McDaniel Mapes passed away April 4, surrounded by her family. Dorothy was born in Florence, Alabama on December 17, 1928. She was raised in Tuscumbia and graduated from Deshler High School where she met the love of her life, Bobby Mapes. They were married 68 years.

Dot helped organize the Willowbrook Garden Club and the Garden Guild at the Huntsville Botanical Garden. She held many offices with the Garden Club of Alabama and was President from 1999-2001. She also served on the Deep South Garden Club Board for many years. Dot was a Master Flower Show Judge and member of the Alabama Flower Show Judges Council. She was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church for over 50 years.

Dot was preceded in death by her parents, Tolbert McDaniel and Lena Mauldin, her husband, Robert Mapes, and daughter, Lisa Hargrove.

She is survived by two daughters, Nancy O’Neal (Ernest) of Wilmot, Arkansas and Cherie Theis (John) of Daphne, Alabama; grandchildren, Greg O’Neal, Robert O’Neal, Leigh Ann Hargrove (Deanna Cummings), Amy Rousayne (Austin), Beth Ivy and Todd Theis (Katie); great- granddaughters, Kinlee, Abby, Claire and Avery; and great-grandsons, Jackson, Cooper and John Hayes.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. on Friday, April 11, 2025, at Trinity United Methodist Church. The funeral will follow at the church with the Rev. Mac Buttram officiating. Everyone is invited to stay for a reception following the service. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. on Friday at Oakwood Cemetery in Tuscumbia, Alabama.

Pallbearers will be Greg O’Neal, Robert O’Neal, Todd Theis, Austin Rousayne, Chris Mapes, and Lester Ross, Jr.
