Doris Nelle Payne – Obituary

Doris Nelle Payne, the youngest daughter of Robert Andrew and Dora Plemons  Payne  died on Monday, October 23, 2017 at Decatur Morgan Hospital.  Miss Payne was born January 30, 1923 in Hartselle, Alabama.  Following her graduation from Morgan County High School in 1940, she continued her education at Alabama Polytechnic Institute  (Auburn University), where she was graduated in 1944.  She began her career as a secretary at Courtland Air Base and later at Wolverine Tube in Decatur before moving to Dallas, Texas to work at Olin Mathieson Chemical Corporation­­­­­­­­­­­.   She also worked at Thiokol in  Woodbine, Georgia and in Huntsville and retired from  IBM in Atlanta, Georgia.

She accepted Christ as her Savior at an early age, trusting His love and care for her,  and was a faithful member of  First Baptist Church in Hartselle, supporting it and its missions outreaches.

‘Aunt Nelle’  loved her family and was especially close to her nieces  and nephews.  She was a loyal friend,  visiting and staying in touch with  those from her childhood as well as new ones she made throughout her life.  She enjoyed reading  and travel,  and in recent years, playing Bridge with  friends.

Miss Payne  is survived by her sister, Gwendolyn Payne Wesson;  her niece, Jane Turney and her husband,  Doug;  her nephew, Bob Wesson and his wife, Bobbie, all of Hartselle; her grandnephews and grandnieces, Richard Preston Turney and his wife, Penny , and their sons, Payne  Keith  Turney and Arthur Douglas Turney, of Springville,  Alabama;   Carol Ann Turney, of Nashville, Tennessee;  Clay Edward Wesson,  of McMinnville, Oregon;  Elizabeth Anne Wesson Limbaugh and her husband, Patrick, of Birmingham, Alabama.

A funeral  service for Miss Payne will be held at Peck Funeral Home Chapel on Thursday, October 26, 2017, at 11:00 AM., with Bro. Charles Shaddix and Bro. Clayton Speed officiating.  Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until service time,  with burial in Hartselle City Cemetery.  Peck Funeral Home directing.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that any memorial gifts be made to First Baptist Church, Hartselle, or the charity or ministry of your choice.
