Dora Odell Shaw Gilbert – Obituary

Mrs. Dora Odell Shaw Gilbert, 98, of Mount Airy, NC, formerly of Huntsville, AL, passed away early Tuesday morning, June 14, 2016, at Golden Living Center in Mount Airy, NC. Mrs. Gilbert was born April 2, 1918, in Talladega, AL, the daughter of the late Patrick John and Cynthia Mamie Lybrand Shaw. Dora retired from Medical Center Hospital after many years of service. She was a charter member of Weatherly Heights Baptist Church, where she served for more than 50 years. After moving to Mount Airy, NC, she became a member of First Baptist Church.
She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Bob Wallace of Woodbridge, VA, and Frances and Butch Baker of Huntsville, AL; a son and daughter-in-law, the Rev. Dr. Roger B. and Deidra Gilbert of Mount Airy, NC; five grandchildren, Wayne Compton, Michael Compton, Camille Sommer, Dean Johnson, and Kristi Hill; nine great-grandchildren; a brother, Edward Shaw of Bridge City, TX; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Gilbert was preceded in death by her husband, Russell Bruce Gilbert; a grandson, Brent Andrew Gilbert; two sisters; and a brother.
A service of worship and a celebration of Dora’s life will be held Tuesday, June 21, 2016, at 11:00 AM at Weatherly Heights Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. David B. Freeman officiating. Interment will follow at Huntsville Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 10:00 until 11:00 AM at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church, 714 North Main Street, Mount Airy, NC 27030; or Weatherly Heights Baptist Church, 1306 Cannstatt Drive, Huntsville, AL 35803.
